RCM Cheeto and RCM Frito apparently planned their sister pregnancies together, giving birth on the same day to these two little cuties Jalapeño and Hickory, making them half brothers and also cousins!  Cheeto gave birth late afternoon September 18th, followed by Frito just a few hours later. These two females came to us together as calves themselves, they are always together on the ranch and clearly decided to calve together which is pretty cool if you ask me. Sired by RCM Ollie our a Miniature Silver Highland Bull, Jalapeño and Hickory are two completely different shades of dun. Jalapeño is the lighter baby and Hickory the darker baby. Both boys are loaded with hair, small framed and compact, making them great candidates for a chondro female program coming from small framed highland dams with great calving ease.

Oh baby Baloo, just look at you! Baloo was born on September 16th, son of RCM Ollie and RCM Janice and putting it simply, he came out on the struggle bus. Baby Baloo really struggled with all natural instincts of nursing and required several days of assistance and supervision. No rhyme or reason given he had a simple and straight forward birth and mumma Janice is an excellent helicopter dam but baby Baloo sure milked his extended stay in the maternity barn. Baloo is a cutie pie though, gentle soul, dun in color and non chondro. He will make a wonderful pet steer addition to those looking for a companion animal or working in agricultural tourism.

My early morning check on the pasture had me roll up on Sonny giving birth to a Mighty Warrior calf. I never actually expect to find a new born on pasture as we do a great job having our heavy bred girls up in the barn for calving but each morning in the dark I still go out and flashlight the herd just to make sure and just to make sure no one is in crisis. As I drove up on Sonny initially, she was down and pushing with the front feet and head just about to pop.  So I kept driving and went on by hoping I hadn’t delayed the process.  I made the loop around my heavy bred paddock and came back to baby Timber safety out and Sonny working on cleaning him up.  Timber is a stunning small framed Dun Tipped 87.5% Highland percentage Non Chondro Highpark Bull Calf that is simply loaded in some dense perfectly speckled hair. Timber is a gem of a little bull calf prospect, small framed and a rainbow maker being dun in color.  If you’re looking for flare and hair - Timber is your man!

The birth of baby Eddie was potentially the shortest and most straight forward birth to date - less than 30 minutes from start to finish and mumma Sass had this little guy out, up and going!  It was impressive to say the least. Sass is our commercial Char x Show Heifer who retired from the show world after winning Grand Champion years ago.  We were so close to making it through the first half of our Fall Calving Season without having to place a calf on the bottle and I was feeling quite optimistic we might make the season without one, until now.  This was a hard one for me.  Phenomenal dam who loves her baby and has the best motherly instincts but unfortunately at 14 yrs of age, my sweet girl Sunset just isn’t able to produce enough milk to sustain a calf long term and have it thrive VS just survive. Pulling a calf from its mumma is never an easy decision for me. It burns a hole in my heart for my mumma cow who grew the baby, birthed the baby, cleaned the baby, nursed the baby and loved her baby. Little Pippins was born on Sunday September 13th, and was given 100g 1gG bagged colostrum for her first 2 feedings to cover our suspicion of lack of milk production. Since then we have been watching Pippins with caution to see if her belly was ever truly full after nursing. Pippins would go from teat to teat hunting for more milk and would eventually give up in frustration and lay back down.  Yesterday morning after watching her nurse, I made up a bottle and offered it to her. No coaxing was needed, she latched on immediately and drowned the bottle in no time. It was in that moment I knew we had our first bottle calf of the season. I don’t like bottle babies and I don’t support the bottle calf industry pulling babies from extremely capable dams. It honestly makes me sick, makes me want to vomit and face punch some people. Pippins has been placed on the bottle as a must have for her long term nutritional requirements to be met and survival.  Raising a bottle calf takes time, dedication and commitment. They rely on us 100% for their food source, their social interaction and stimulation. Pippins will be available once we work out all the kinks that come along with the yo yoing of raising a bottle calf,  until then, imma love this perfect little girl big and make sure she is living her best life.
