Who’d of thought THIS could come out of a Charolais x Cow? Well when your daddy is RCM Mighty Warrior this is always going to be the perfect result!  Our once upon time grand champion show heifer Sass is also pretty impressed with herself and her sweet little heavily marked Highpark Bull Calf.  He is a little showstopper just like his mumma and perfectly stamped by his daddy. He is packing some pretty big non chondro genetics with the charolais x and will naturally be steered because of this but he will still make someone an exceptional pet steer. RCM Yellow Jackets calving ease stats continue to impress us with the success of another chondro female calving by RCM Stella. Stella’s labor was a very short 30 minutes from active labor to birth, popping out baby Cherry with ease.  Cherry was up and going in no time, hunting to eat as Stella worked hard to lick her clean and dry through all that hair!  The hair!!! Our Fall Calving Season officially started over the weekend with the arrival of this sweet little HighBelt Heifer Calf sired by RCM Silver Jackpot and RCM Missy. Thanks to the fast action of my husband and mumma being as gentle as they come, he was able to intervene and break the sack in a timely manner. RCM Highway #120 gave us yet another phenomenal 87.5% Highland percentage Highpark Heifer - suspected chondro postive pending testing. This little girl is a showstopper laced with hair, color and thickness.  She is just absolutely precious.  Highway #120 has thanked us a hundred times over for keeping her when she was purchased from an out of state buyer wanting to ship her to IL.  My husband and I picked the herd of cows up for the buyer to hold until they could arrange shipping.  Highway #120 hardly made the 1 hour trip to our house, getting off the trailer and barely being able to walk.  I told the buyers we would not be putting this cow back on a trailer for several weeks as she would not make the long trip to IL, they’d have to ship her at a later date or just sell her to me.  So we bought her to keep her here and recover her. Highway #120 spent 3 weeks in a stall in deep bedding to comfort her feet, taking her food and water to her as she slowly recovered from years of neglect.  I have a very special place in my heart for Highway #120 and I swear the sweet girl knows we saved her.  I always say “ animals find us “ and Highway #120 picked us knowing she’d get to live a beautiful life here on the ranch till her last days on earth.

 Our girl Piper gave us this overmarked Highpark Heifer Calf on August 17th and Snickers is another successful calving from a chondro female , sired by RCM Yellow Jacket - Yellow Miniature Highland Bull. Calving out chondro females always makes me a little more anxious then normal during a calving but Yellow Jacket has had some excellent cleaning ease stats and this little girl weighed in at 38lbs at birth and 22 inches.  I’m on the fence if she is chondro positive or not as she isn’t the traditional thick chondro calf on presentation but she sure is tiny and petite. Snickers is heterozygous polled and pending chondro testing.  Her markings are that of an over marked Highpark often referred to as a “ lineback “ in the cattle industry. RCM Scout is about as boldly and intensely marked as they come ! He is drop dead gorgeous, as fluffy as a teddy bear and dang those markings are loud!  Scout was born on July 22nd to RCM Charlee, sired by the one and only RCM Mighty Warrior. After a long fight to save Charlee, we very sadly lost Charlee to post calving complications and Scout is now a bottle baby. Scout is thriving and adjusting to his new life well. - ❤️ Back in February of this year, I stumbled across an absolutely drop dead gorgeous Red Brindle Highland Cow I HAD TO HAVE - aka Calamity Jane. I hooked the truck and trailer up and took off on a 10 hour adventure to go get her and this week she gave us the most beautiful little red highland heifer calf, sired by an outside registered AHCA Bull.  Baby Girl says it’s too hot to be born, it’s too hot to be having my picture taken and it’s too hot to go outside ! I agree with her whole heartedly but non the less, I’m loving the arrival of our latest heifer calf born on June the 14th in the cool of the evening. Dam RCM Poppy is a Dun Highbelt and you guessed it, her sire is RCM Mighty Warrior. This boldly marked little heifer calf is suspected chondro positive, horned and perfectly stamped. I always feel for the calves born in the heat of the Summer and we are oddly warm for this time of year here in Colorado at 7000’. Baby girl got her freedom walk today to pasture to join the rest of the pairs on pasture, leaving the comfort of her stall and fan. She wasn’t super impressed with me but there is no better place for a calf then to be then outside in the fresh air, tall grass with the herd learning the ways of the world.

- ❤️ On Saturday night as we were headed to dinner with friends, I said to my husband “ just going to check cows one more time and I’ll meet you there “. As I peeked in on the cows Beatrice was chewing her cud but had a puddle of something right next to her. Was it urine or fluid?  I jumped the fence to confirm either way. It was fluid. Looking at Beatrice you’d never of known she was in labor as she was as relaxed and as content as could be like the rest of the heavy bred cows under watch. I parked my truck and took up my position in the barn to wait and watch for baby to arrive. 30 minutes passed and Beatrice came to the barn gates asking to come in, the only place she has ever had her babies since coming to us as a yearling. I opened the gate to let her in and then opened the gate to the maternity stall and she walked right in and started preparing to give birth. An hour later Beatrice gave birth to a very pretty little Yellow Highland Heifer with minimal effort or drama involved sired by RCM Silver Sterling. I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday evening then watching Beatrice give birth in the quiet of the evening, sitting on buckets, drinking a beer and having the best conversation with one of my favorite rodeo kids who stuck around to keep me company.  Raising cattle is absolutely a lifestyle, a lifestyle I wouldn’t change for anything ❤️ -

RCM Ollie’s first Silver Highland Heifer of the season arrived on April the 4th born to RCM Stevie, a Small Framed White Highland Cow.  Bubbles was unfortunately injured at 10 days of age and suffered a soft tissue injury to her front left fetlock on the feed line. After a 10 day treatment protocol of stall rest, antibiotics and being splinted, she has made a full recovery and has been cleared by our vet as sound and ready to go.  Bubbles is now living her best life on pasture with her dam and the rest of the pairs.  She has tested silver - heterozygous, horned and non chondro.

Born coming backwards, baby Minnie made her grand appearance on April the 30th just before 8pm. Meet Sylvie the sweetest, cheekiest little bottle heifer to date !  Sylvie was born on May 1st and spent the first week with her dam RCM Tina, a gorgeous smaller framed Dun Highland Cow who unfortunately does not have enough milk to sustain a calf long term. Tina is one of our older females at 14 years of age. The decision was made to put Sylvie on the bottle for her own well being and she is thriving and keeping baby Grace company. Sylvie is a rambunctious, playful and a space invading piranha who just loves and demands attention.  She is friendly and sociable outside of feeding time and we are working with her on her spacial boundaries. Sylvie gets 3 bottles a day - morning, lunch and dinner and will need to be bottle fed until she is a minimum of 4 months of age.  She is accepting the halter and learning to lead without a bottle for encouragement.  She will stand tied for grooming, bathing and blow outs and is overall a very good dispositioned calf.  Bottle babies are work and they must be handled outside of bottle feeding times and taught to be respectful. I highly encourage feeding bottle babies on a hanger to prevent head butting and associating their human as a boxing bag. I will only let Sylvie go to a home with cattle experience as bottle babies do require a more trained eye in regard to catching early onset illness before it’s too late.  Bottle babies love to get pneumonia whether weather related or aspiration pneumonia or sometimes for no reason at all 😂. Sylvie has not had any illness since being born - pneumonia or scours but a change in environment could certainly bring either on due to stressing a developing immune system and that of a bottle calf.  Ask questions. I will answer them open and honestly. Sylvia is sired by RCM Silver Sterling, she is a silver highland heifer, non chondro.

Born with the sack over her face, calvings like this remind us why we watch our mumma cows so closely during calving season. We got all the look and the hair of the Highland Breed and the Roaning Gene from the Shorthorn Breed of cattle combined into one perfect little heifer calf. I can’t even explain and put into words our excitement over this gorgeous girls arrival but what I can say is 

- she is actually a ROAN, not an overly marked Highpark like some people are trying to market and sell as roans now 

- she doesn’t have “roan tones” she is a ROAN 

- we know who her parents are and are willing to provide that information to her buyer, not withhold. 

This girl is spectacular with roaning all through out her body, heavy on the neck, chest and hind end. She is absolutely stunning and what breeding goals are made of. RCM Silver Sterling and RCM Roanie genetics knocked it out of the park this season.

 Round 2 of Calving is off to an epic start with a Shortie White Highland Heifer Calf and this one was an exciting backwards pull making her grand entry into the world.  Calving season requires you to be present and paying full attention to your cows behavior. You don’t get days off during calving season. Between my husband and I, one of us is always present on the ranch, not touring about the country side hoping for the best. I watched dam Lilly be in pre early labor all morning till finally settling down around 1pm to have her calf. As soon as she settled I was in position, binoculars in hand , waiting for feet. I saw feet but they were either upside down front feet or back feet coming backwards - both presentations can look the same when just the tips are showing. However either presentation in incorrect so it was time to get Lilly in the chute. On palpation it was obvious they were back feet by feeling the hocks present so I prepared to pull the calf quickly and effectively backwards.  Chains on, puller ready and go! Calf pulled in less then 60 seconds with ease and baby was out and placed into recovery position.   Lilly was let out of the chute to clean her baby up and get to work. Coming out backwards did not slow this little heifer down at all! She was up and going in no time looking for the good stuff - Milk.  I will admit though, when I’m forced to deal with a calving emergency alone without my husband home, I do go into panic mode just a little bit 😂 which is so silly as I’ve assisted with breached births many of times successfully . I think the idea of failing my mumma cow and her baby gets the best of me and the idea of a calf dying because I wasn’t quick enough or capable enough takes over my brain and correct thought process. Adrenaline takes over 100% too. When my husband is home to handle these situations , just feels better but I’d never admit that to him.

I sure do love the variety of the Highpark Breed of Cattle! From as flashy and overly marked as it gets to the simple homozygous marked calves who bring a whole new level of playing cards to the table. Here is what little cow dreams are made of - The Silver Chondro Highland Heifer. Born on March 8th without a hitch, we welcome baby Silver Belle to the ranch. She is sired by RCM Silver Sterling and RCM Flo - Small Framed 43 inch White Highland Cow. Silver Belle was born at 20 inches tall, 36lbs and loaded with hair and personality. She is going to be a spectacular foundation female one day when she grows up!

Introducing little Juniper born on March 12th, daughter of RCM Silver Sterling and RCM Y-1 in the very wee hours of the morning. Juniper is a Non Chondro Yellow Highland Heifer Calf and couldn’t be more different to her full 2024 sister who was a dun shortie heifer calf.  Juniper has an adorable little head that’s short and blocky, beautiful dense yellow hair that can make all colors of the highland rainbow being a single dilute and just 24 inches at birth / 44lbs.  She is an adorable little highland calf backed by some nice small compact genetics here on the ranch.

Our cows never seem to stop throwing us a curve ball here and there, reminding us of just how important routine is to them and the birth of this Silver Highland Heifer Calf was one of those moments. We watched her Dam Silver Belle all day toodle about the heavy bred pen, one end to the other and up and down up and down.  This always tells us “ they are going to calve today “ when they won’t settle for the day and just chill and chew their cud.  So we watched and waited all day for her to go into actual pre labor and start the true labor stomp marching with purpose, kinked tail and all. 5pm rolled around to let the girls in for dinner. Everyone came up and went to eating except for Silver Belle who stood at the gates to the maternity barn basically telling us “ let me in to the barn , I’m ready to have my baby right now !” We let her into the maternity stall and by 5.30 we had a baby on the ground covered in meconium but alive and well. I truly believe Silver Belle waited most of the day to have her baby in the barn where she has had her last 4 babies.  She didn’t want to have it outside with the other cows close by, she wanted her freshly bedded stall and privacy. There wasn’t one time during the day watching her we were worried as she never got the tail kink, never went into the true labor stomp, never laid down with contractions and started to push and no water bag was ever present. There was nothing to worry about. I truly believe she was just waiting to come into the barn to have baby Maggie in a clean, dry and private setting because for Silver Belle , the barn is where you have your babies at RCM

His eye catching marking are striking and bold and look like they were painted on just for him.  He is suspected chondro positive and polled pending testing. Dam Pandy gave us yet another stunning Red Tipped Highpark heifer born on  April 2nd sired by the one and only RCM Mighty Warrior. Waiting 3 years for a calf to be born from one of your baby girls seems like a long time until that perfect baby hits the ground ! RCM Starla gave birth on April Fools Day in the wee morning hours to the thinnest, cutest all black little heifer calf, suspected chondro positive. Baby Boo stands at just 20 inches tall and weighing in at 38lbs. Yet another gorgeous Silver Highland Heifer born on March 27th sired by RCM Ollie and RCM Duckie. We are still waiting on her chondro results to come in but we suspect she is chondro negative at 23 inches at birth, just making her a very small framed heifer calf.  Frannie is a sweetheart and will come and seek you out for some extra attention and love when walking through pairs due to the extra attention she received the first week of life with assistance in nursing.  Mummas bag made her work hard for a meal whereas I was an easy feeding.  We are still supplementing Frannie twice daily with a bottle but allowing her to stay with her dam for comfort and protection.  She absolutely has the best of both worlds. RCM Silver Sterling continues to stamp those baby boys of his with thickness, hair and the chondro gene calf after calf. Born on March 5th, RCM New Castle gave birth to a little yellow fluff ball of a bull calf unassisted and this little guy is pretty dang adorable.  He has a fat little squishy head, tons of gorgeous yellow hair and is just one stout thickly built bull calf. Little baby Muffet was born on April the 7th and this little heifer is petite!  At just 24 inches at birth, non chondro, polled and dun, sweet baby girl had a very easy entrance into the world. Her dam RCM Katy a first time 75% Highland x 25% Galloway handled her first calving like a pro and had Muffet up and going in no time. What a handsome little devil this Dun Highbelt Bull Calf is!   He has a big family tree here in the ranch from previous aunts and uncles being retained over the years. His great gran dam also being one of our very original cows back in 2015. This guy is perfectly marked with a full, wide and complete belt. He is sired by RCM Silver Sterling giving him a 50% highland percentage. His dam RCM Baby Doll is a perfectly marked black and white panda cow, 44 inches, born and raised on our ranch in 2018.  I’m absolutely obsessed with this guys markings and how could you not be ! His markings are intense, bold and so striking that he just pops perfection.  His Highpark mumma Belle always tries to throw us solid coated babies but when bred to Warrior you can’t , but she sure tried 😂   This little bull calf is your Chondro Heifer Sire Prospect if I ever did see one hit the ground. At birth I thought he was a chondro positive bull calf by his look and small size until I measured him at 23 inches, leading me to believe he is a non chondro bull, making him the perfect sire for those chondro females.  We are testing for confirmation but this guy is legit! We are pretty sure that Big Red was thanking us for buying her back and rescuing her 18 months ago when she gave us this handsome little Highpark Bull Calf sired by RCM Mighty Warrior on April 6th unassisted. Red came home to us 3 years after being sold as a calf, in terrible body condition along with her 3 half sisters.  Our hearts were so sad for the group of 4 sisters we vowed to never sell again. RCM Heidi and RCM Sterling made the perfect little Dun Panlander Heifer Calf, born March 8th with ease and unassisted.  Heidi is a small framed Highland x Hereford cow, giving this heifer calf a 75% highland percentage. She is cute as button with her pretty white face and little pink nose. She has some white tuffs along her ear margins and within and beautiful feathering coming down her face already.  Heidi her mumma is genuinely one of the calmest cows around, allowing you to do anything with her babies and her disposition will no doubt be passed down to her calf. RCM Little Bubbas first baby has arrived on the ranch and we are pretty excited for this tiny little heifers birth. Bubba is our home raised Non Chondro 42 inch Dun Tipped Highpark Bull we retained in 2022 as a future herd sire for our Chondro Female Program. He was selected to be retained for his low birth weight and height, calving ease and small generational Non Chondro Genetics. Our goal was to provide Non Chondro Proven Semen options down the road for our Chondro Heifer Buyers, taking the search and stress out of finding that small proven non chondro bull for their chondro heifers. Bubbas dam RCM Chloe is a small framed 43 inch Whitepark Cow also born and raised on our ranch, his grand dam RCM Sweet Pea is a small framed Whitepark Cow 42 inches. Bubbas sire is our original Silver Highland Bull RCM Captain Silver, chondro positive 38 inches. 

Baby girls dam RCM Milkshake is a Chondro Positive Highpark Cow 3yr old 38 inches and I will say when she went into labor, anxiety was high we were praying for a smooth and easy delivery. Baby girl was born with ease and unassisted at 32lbs and 19 inches.  She is suspected chondro positive, polled and HOMOZYGOUS white - pending testing.  She is just the smallest, tiniest little bundle of 3 years of waiting. Takes more then 1 calf to prove a bull but I think we are off to a good start.
